Nowadays, learning what Balen Shah is up to must be the highlight for Nepali citizens. He’s exactly the kind of leader that Nepali citizens have been clamoring for. As the mayor of Kathmandu city, he has been highly proactive and is bringing drastic changes to the city’s administration.
But this has also meant a great deal of dramatic action on the streets of Kathmandu. From fixing the city’s parking issues to rediscovering a whole river, Balen Shah has been working relentlessly to ‘fix’ Kathmandu.
And in this process, he’s now attached to the word ‘dozer’ more than anything. After giving an ultimatum of 30 days to empty out parking spaces and illegally made buildings, Balen then took drastic action by breaking down illegal constructions in the city.
Here are 8 major buildings that Balen Shah has run over with a dozer.
1. Laxmi Bank
One of the major constructions that Balen Shah has demolished as the mayor of Kathmandu has been the Laxmi Bank located in Kamaladi. The irony that citizens pointed out was how banks have strict policies regarding land as collateral. But the bank’s construction itself was on illegal grounds, literally on top of the long-lost Tukucha river. Now, Balen has the whole building surrounded by dozers, and in the process of being demolished.
2. Jai Nepal Cinema Hall
One of the first moves Balen Shah made in the rediscovery of Tukucha river was by digging up 15 feet into the Jai Nepal Cinema Hall compound with a dozer. The Jai Nepal Cinema Hall is a major structure of Kathmandu’s modern history. Conducting a dozer raid into the property was definitely a gutsy move for the new Kathmandu mayor, but he has proven many times that he doesn’t let anything stand between him and his duties.
3. RB Complex And Suraj Arcade
New Road has always been a crowded space, especially in areas around major buildings like RB Complex and Suraj Arcade. To fix this, Balen Shah ran a dozer across illegally made stalls covering the RB Complex area. Moreover, underground shops functioning inside Suraj Arcade were also emptied. Unfortunately, these areas also included everybody’s favorite Pani Puri place that famously stood right in the middle of the People’s Plaza chowk.
4. Department Of Passport
This key government building in Kathmandu didn’t exactly see dozer action. But, the Metropolitan police did empty out the parking basement inside of the building which was functioning as a waiting room. But, since not many people know of this, a long line of bikes outside is still a constant sight.
5. Kathmandu Mall
The demolition at Kathmandu Mall is probably the most viral incident of dozer demolition under Balen’s tenure till date. Not only did the famous mall have illegal structures in front of it, but the building itself also was apparently made without legal approval. Although illegal shops on the compound are gone, information on what will happen to the Kathmandu Mall itself is yet to come.
6. Koteshwor Bhatbhateni
Despite having a dedicated parking space, the Koteshwor Bhatbhateni would still have a crowd outside. Turns out, the huge parking space too had shops operating inside. Balen and the police along with a dozer successfully demolished those shops. The team also cleared out the areas around Bhatbhateni.
7. Alfa Beta Complex
When Balen first went to the Alfa beta building, the owner refused to show their map to the metropolitan team. Later, Balen himself went to the office and brought a map along with a dozer and started the demolishing process. Balen went viral again for openly losing his temper against the insolent owner of the Alfa Beta complex. As it turns out, the owner was renting out the underground parking space to other cafes and a pharmacy.
8. London Pub
Balen Shah also reached the London Pub located in Durbarmarg. Since it too was operating in an underground parking space, the police asked them to move out.
