All You Need To Know About The New Rivalry Between Bhuwan KC & Pradeep Khadka

It has barely been a month since veteran actor of Nepali cinema, Bhuwan KC took his seat as the Chairman of Film Development Board of Nepal. But as in the height of his career, he has quickly found controversy in this new station in life as well. No sooner was he appointed to the position, he had to face the Supreme Court to keep his title because apparently being a veteran film star wasn’t enough to sit in such an important position — you needed a fitting education for it too.

The Supreme Court allowed him to keep the position despite not having the proper educational qualifications for it. After all, degrees aren’t everything. But he has quickly found yet another controversy, this time fully justifying any doubts about his appointment to the Film Development Board.

The latest feud between veteran actor Bhuwan KC and rising star Pradeep Khadka has held the attention of the entire country for the past couple of days. Khadka recently demanded a resignation from KC, despite the fact that he’s been a powerful figure in the Nepali film industry even before his appointment to the Film Board. The reason he’s been making such a demand, however, will quickly turn you over to his side.

Khadka has recently been in the midst of a career transformation, turning in his own words from a ;star’ to an ‘actor’. In the Nepali film business, he is counted among just a few new-generation actors to have true star power, alongside (and this is important) the ‘megastar’ Anmol KC. Most recently, however, he has sought to reinvent this image by taking up dramatic roles in films such as Prakash.

However, his biggest preoccupation at this moment surely has to be the movie Prem Geet 3. This was a fulfilment of a dream he had shared a few years ago, in which a Nepali film would be dubbed in many international languages and watched in countries around the world Prem Geet 3 was the culmination of this idea, executed by Khadka himself, and the movie was set to be released in Indian cinemas in Indian-language dubs.

However, his biggest preoccupation at this moment surely has to be the movie Prem Geet 3. This was a fulfilment of a dream he had shared a few years ago, in which a Nepali film would be dubbed in many international languages and watched in countries around the world. Prem Geet 3 was the culmination of this idea, executed by Khadka himself, and the movie was set to be released in Indian cinemas in Indian-language dubs.

However, when it came time to release the movie in Nepali theatres, Khadka claims that he faced numerous pushbacks in the form of unnatural rules from none other than the Film Development Board.

Some of these rules include the sudden new requirement that cinema halls be closed down by 11 pm, which would require the last screening of the day to take place at 8 pm. Additionally, KC is also dead set on categorizing Prem Geet 3 as a foreign film, purely because it was dubbed in international languages and released in foreign theatres. This categorization would mean that the movie would have to pay an additional 15% tax on its revenue when screening in Nepal, which is a tax reserved for foreign films.

Onlookers have various interpretations of the incidents that have transpired, and none of them are a good look for the veteran actor. Some believe that KC fears the earning potential of Prem Geet 3 as a true international release, and that the movie’s box office earnings would displace KC and his troupe’s power and control over Nepali cinema.

But the conspiracy theory that’s much more popular than that is the one related to Khadka’s natural rivalry with Anmol KC. It is barely a secret that Bhuwan KC wants his son, Anmol, to be the top film star of this generation — an achievement he himself is known to be sore about missing out on. But the latest career decisions by Pradeep Khadka poses him as a highly proficient dramatic actor rather than just a pretty film star. Prem Geet 3 adds even greater concerns for the KC family as its an unprecedented cinematic project in Nepal’s film history that could be a huge success.

Nepali film fans who keep up with the sector’s sizzling gossip have been quick to call for KC’s resignation as the Chairman of the Film Development Board. But given that he’s virtually an untouchable figure, it is unlikely that he would roll back any of the Board’s recent controversial decisions.
