“Suun na, paisa kamaune daami plan cha masanga!”
It’s an immutable fact of life that every Nepali lad utters a variation of the above statement at some time or another. Money-making schemes are a favorite topic of discussion among Nepali boys; they have spent countless hours imagining scenarios where they suddenly stumble upon a money-making secret that makes them crores within a matter of months.
Basically, all Nepali boys are pretty much Haku Kale from Loot — but without the guts to pull off a bank heist.
The vast majority of Nepali boys go their entire lives without ever finding their money plant. But for 31-year-old Bharat BK, these wild dreams actually came true — he became 34 crores richer, literally overnight.
Bharat, who works as a car washer in Dubai, became the very first Nepali to win top prize in a popular lottery contest there known as Mahzooz Draw. News reports mention that more than 2000 Nepalis in Dubai take part in this competition regularly. Bharat himself had been buying tickets to the draw for the past two years.
Until one fateful night, when he saw his own ticket numbers called out on the television. He suddenly became 10 million dirhams richer — an amount that comes out to around 34 crore Nepali rupees.
We just can’t help thinking about all the curses the other 2000 Nepali participants must have hurled his way, in the privacy of their own room. A Nepali, same as them, winning a massive lottery that can probably set him up for life — why couldn’t it have been them?
But Bharat isn’t spinning some crazy plans about how he wants to spend the money. In fact, he isn’t even planning on quitting his car washing job. OnlineKhabar reported that he didn’t even have a bank account in Dubai when he saw the winning numbers on TV. He had, after all, been living on a paltry 1300 dirhams every month, out of which he had to spend back money for his family, and his younger brother’s treatment for brain tumor-related paralysis.
It is often hard to make sense of the big things that come our way in life, whether good or bad. But it is probably safe to say that Bharat BK is going to put that money to good use.
