Nepal has had an unprecedented increase in rape cases in recent years. With 420 rape cases in the last two months alone and an average of at least 6 rape cases (60% minors) daily since last year, rape has become a nuisance that is screaming for a dire response.
During these trying times, Nepali Women have never felt more unsafe in their country. Instead of assuring them for their safety, Nepali Home Minister, Ram Bahadur Thapa normalized the issue by comparing Nepal’s number of rape cases to the world rape statistics, after stating that it falls in the bottom 15 of the world.
This was received with mass outrage with people questioning not only the competence but also the intention of the government.
Here Are A Few Reactions:
“You don’t have to worry about the spike in rape cases because Nepal still ranks in bottom 15 in the world”.— S̶a̶r̶c̶a̶s̶m̶ 🇳🇵 (@SarcasmNpl) September 30, 2020

In this fiscal year 2,144 cases of rape and 687 cases of rape attempt were recorded in Nepal where most victim were minor girls. This immoral and unethical act should be punished and more uncompromising law should be implemented to stop this inhumane act. @NepalPoliceHQ— Sandip Shrestha (@SandipStha14) October 4, 2020
I think it’s time Women in Nepal should all be taught about the justification of self defense coz— Lhamo Y Sherpa ལྷ་མོ་དབྱངས་ཅན (@Lhamo_Y) October 4, 2020

Bloody hell! Even if there is one rape case, that itself is alarming! I cannot believe #HomeMinister of #Nepal thinks we should not worry about the rising cases of rape happening in #Nepal 😡 you should resign for your incompetence and for this statement 😡 https://t.co/jXS6AFR04w— Hima (हिमा) (@himabista) September 30, 2020
So as per this table Nepal ranks 12th from the bottom with 210 reported rape. If we as a country stopped reporting all rapes, we would rank first from the bottom. Something to think about.— S̶a̶r̶c̶a̶s̶m̶ 🇳🇵 (@SarcasmNpl) October 1, 2020
Or we can just get rid of the motherfuckers in power who shrugg off rapes as just number. pic.twitter.com/Fx1O1wEP5q

One of the main reason why Nepal is one of the countries with the lowest rape cases contributes highly to the fact that 75- 95% of rape cases that are not reported. One of the major concerns that should be alarming is the increase in reported rape cases in the country during these recent years.
