From Swimmers To Shooters To Sprinters, Here Are Nepal’s 5 Picks For The Tokyo Olympics
The Olympics have been a topic of a lot of talk lately, for better or for worse. Regardless, the Olympics have always been the paramount that athletes from all over the world strive for.
Ever since the first modern Olympics began in 1896, athletes from all over the world have been competing to prove that they are the best at what they do.
This year, over 11 thousand athletes have taken part in the Tokyo olympics. And you’ll be happy to know that Nepal has 5 of their own competing!
Here are Nepal’s 5 picks for the Tokyo Olympics.
Gaurika Singh | Swimming | Women’s 100 Meter Freestyle
18-year-old swimmer Gaurika Singh will represent Nepal in the women’s 100 meter freestyle event.
Singh, who came into limelight as the youngest athlete in the 2016 Rio Olympics at the age of 13, will also be Nepal’s flag bearer in the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics this year.

Some of Singh’s notable achievements include; claiming 4 gold medals in the South Asian Games held in Kathmandu, 2 silver and three bronze medals in the 2016 South Asian Games held in India.
Alexander Gadegaard Shah | Swimming | Men’s 100 Meter Freestyle
Representing Nepal in the Men’s 100 meter freestyle event will be national record holder Alexander Gadegaard Shah.

Shah will be representing Nepal for his first time in the Olympics. Previously, Shah represented Nepal in the World Championships and came in 101st in the 50 m freestyle and 102nd in the 100 m freestyle.
Shah holds national records for both 50 and 100 meter freestyles.
Sarswati Chaudhary | Track and Road | Women’s 100 Meter Sprint
Track and field athlete Sarswati Chaudhary will be representing Nepal in the Women’s 100 meter sprint.
Chaudhary will be representing Nepal for her first time in the Olympics. Her previous achievements include; solely representing Nepal in the 2019 World Athletic Championships for the women’s 100 meter event, and setting a Nepalese record of 12.72 seconds while ranking 46th overall.
Soniya Bhatta | Judo | Women’s 46 kg (Extra-lightweight)
19 year old professional Judoka, Soniya Bhatta will be representing Nepal in the Women’s 46 kg (extra-lightweight) event in the Tokyo Olympics.
While Chaudhary will be representing Nepal for her first time in the Olympics, she is well familiar with international events.

Her under-16 achievements include; Placing 5th in the Asian Cadet Championship and the Hong Kong Cadets Asian Cup in 2018, and participating in the Macau Cadets Asian Cup and The Youth Summer Olympics in 2018.
Along with claiming the bronze medal in the 2019 South Asian Games, Bhatta has also participated in The World Championship Juniors 2019 and the Asia-Oceania Senior Championships 2021.
Kalpana Pariyar | Shooting | Women’s 10 Meter Air Rifle
Representing Nepal in the Women’s 10 Meter Air Rifle event in the Tokyo Olympics will be 26-year-old Kalpana Pariyar.
Along with many other qualifiers from Nepal, she will also be representing Nepal in the Olympics for the first time.

Previously, Pariyar placed 45th in the 2018 Asian Games, claimed a silver medal in the 2019 South Asian Games, placed 47th in the 2019 Asian Shooting Championships, and placed 101st in the 2019 ISSF World Cup.
