Winners of major sporting events win praise, glory, and the hearts of many people; but we can’t forget that they also win actual, tangible prizes that are worth a lot of money. While the value of trophies change after they’ve been won, we can still see what could at least come out of the raw material and melt value of these prestigious awards. Of course, no one is selling these, but it doesn’t hurt to wonder, right?

So here are how much the winning trophies of these major sporting are valued at.

Olympic Gold Medals

Like all events these days, the gold medals awarded at the Olympics aren’t actual gold, and haven’t been since 1912. Although the gold medals today contain about six grams of gold and 494 grams of silver, the gold being used to plate the medal.

The current market price of 6 grams of gold is approximately $349 and 494 grams of silver is $400, so the value of one Olympic gold medal should come to be around $800 with manufacturing cost considered. In total 812 athletes are awarded the gold medal, so the Olympics really spends a fortune on these.

FIFA World Cup

Unlike medals, the FIFA world cup trophy is not produced each time, instead the same one is passed to the winners every four years. The world cup trophy that is currently being held by France was created in 1974 by Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga. Standing at 4.5 inches tall, it is made of 13.5 pounds of 18-carat gold and resembles two athletes raising their arms up in victory while holding up the globe.

When the trophy is passed to the new winner, the country name is engraved at the base of the trophy. This trophy is indeed priceless, but if you consider just the melt value, then it’s currently valued at around $20 million.

Super Bowl Trophy

A brand new super bowl trophy is taken by the winning team every year, but that does not make it cheap. It is made of sterling silver and takes about four months to produce. Considering just the melt value it costs around $2000, but adding the production costs, it values at around $50,000.

ICC Cricket World Cup

Created in 1999, this trophy contains silver and gold, with its design being three silver columns holding up a golden globe. It is valued at around $30,000 today. Funnily enough, the winners don’t even get to take it, they are given a replica to take home (although their names are engraved on the original).

European Championship Trophy

Remodeled back in 2008, this prestigious silver trophy is awarded to the winning team every 4 years. Due to the pure sterling silver, the price of this trophy is estimated to be around $15,000.

NBA Trophy

This basketball trophy is made with sterling silver and vermeil with a 24 karat gold overlay. It was first awarded in 1977 and is designed to look like a basketball about to fall into a hoop. Its current market value is estimated to be around $13,500.
