Angel Lama, this year’s Miss Universe Nepal contestant is shattering all stereotypes. Beauty pageants have always been a topic of controversy in Nepal; whether it’s setting unrealistic beauty standards or the lack of representation.
Here is everything you should know about model Angel Lama.
She’s The First Transgender Model To Compete In Miss Universe Nepal.
With the new judgment criteria of Miss Nepal Universe, the pageant has instantly become the first of its kind in many different ways. Not only does Miss Nepal Universe 2020, the first-ever digitally conducted beauty pageant have no limitations on shape and size, it also welcomes any Nepali citizen who identifies themselves as a woman, including trans-women to participate.
This has given Angel an opportunity to be one of the 19 finalists to make history by being the first-ever trans-woman to compete in Miss Universe Nepal 2020.
She is a College-Dropout.
Originally from Kavre, Angel moved to Kathmandu to pursue her higher studies. With her mother being severely ill and being a victim of constant bullying, Angel dropped out of college soon after. In order to support her family, Angel started working at the age of 16.
She Is A Member Of The Blue Diamond Society.
Today, model and social worker, Angel, is an active member of the Blue Diamond Society (BDS), an organization that works for the rights of the LGBTQI+ community in Nepal.
Lama became a part of the Blue Diamond Society after her being abandoned by her divorced parents. She later started working as a Para Social Worker in the organization as well as a model.
She Was Crowned “Miss Pink Nepal 2018.”
Angel might be the first transgender competing in Miss Universe Nepal, but, it isn’t her first beauty pageant. She was previously crowned Miss Pink Nepal 2018, a prestigious pageant for Nepali trans-women.
She Represented Nepal In An International Pageant.
Following the win as Miss Pink Nepal 2018, Lama represented Nepal in a foreign land when she took part in Miss International Queen 2019, held in Pattaya, Thailand.
Lama didn’t bring home the crown, but it became a stepping stone for the transgender model’s career.
She Has Made a Cameo in a Nepali Movie.
Apart from modeling and social work, Angel has also made her acting debut with the movie “A Mero Hajur 3,” where she’s seen playing the character, Juneli.
